A bit about Bansko

3.9/5GOOD (31 REVIEWS)
Known as Bulgaria’s top resort, this location has the region’s best lift system and offers exceptional value for money as an alternative to Alpine skiing. Although the ski area is compact at around 70km of pistes, there’s still enough terrain for beginners and intermediates to enjoy a leisurely ski holiday, without the Alpine price tag. The slopes descend the Todorka mountain, link to a foothill named Chalin Valog, well-connected with modern lifts and are now the host of regular FIS World Cup events. The town itself has plenty of character, with a well-preserved history and heritage, as well as an array of quaint bars, quirky restaurants and cobbled streets, with a lively atmosphere and lots of great après-ski.

Bansko, Bulgaria

Situated at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, Bansko combines modern ski facilities with the charm of a traditional Bulgarian town. With 75 km of well-maintained slopes catering to all proficiency levels, Bansko ensures a varied skiing experience. Additionally, its rich cultural heritage and vibrant apres-ski scene offer a blend of athletic thrill and leisurely relaxation.

Skiing in Bansko

Beginners: Among all ski resorts in Bulgaria, Bansko is particularly favored by beginners due to its accommodating ski conditions and infrastructure. The nursery slopes, situated at the top of the gondola, are shielded from through traffic, ensuring a safe environment for newcomers. Progression to longer, gentle blue runs is a smooth transition for those building their confidence. The best beginner zones are found on a plateau at Bundarishka, 1635m, with more reliable snow conditions than the smaller sector in the town.

Intermediates: For intermediates, Bansko is a paradise with a variety of wide and open blue runs. The Kolarski Express above Shiligarnika provides access to these longer blue terrains. More confident skiers and boarders can revel in the revamped Todorka chair and the Banderitza quads that serve expansive, open red runs. These trails are particularly enjoyable early in the morning when they're freshly groomed. Bars and restaurants near the slopes provide the perfect spots to recharge or relax after a fulfilling day of skiing.

Advanced: Advanced skiers aren't left out either. There's a challenging black piste named after the skiing legend Alberto Tomba. Besides this, the steep finishes at the foot of the World Cup piste offer some excitement. The Fun-Park is a highlight, well-equipped with rails and kickers for those looking to exhibit their expertise. Bansko has also earned a reputation as a hub for extreme competitions, having hosted various European and World FIS tournaments.

Snowboarding: Bansko stands out as a snowboard-friendly resort. Snowboarders can showcase their skills in the Balkans' first Fun Park. This park offers both artificial bumps and jumps, and enthusiasts have the freedom to craft their own. Additionally, there's a half-pipe near Bansko's renowned snow towers, serving as a stage for both skiers and snowboarders to flaunt their tricks. Those eager to refine their snowboarding skills or to start learning will benefit from the ULEN Ski & Board School, equipped with some of Bulgaria's top instructors and premium equipment.
